The Indian Railway network is the fourth largest in the world next only to those of USA, Russia and China. The Indian railways ply over 10,000 trains carrying 30 million passengers and 3 million tonnes of freight everyday. The task of running and managing this railway system across the geographical diversity of the Indian sub- continent is managed by a work force of 1.5 million employees.

The trains in India are classified into 9 types viz. Duronto, Rajdhani, Shatabdi, Gareeb Rath, Jan Shatabdi, Superfast, Express, Passenger and suburban trains. The train schedule depends upon the type of train and whether the train is an express or superfast train. For example, the Duronto and Rajdhani trains are fast trains and have fewer stops as compared to Express Trains, which are slower and have multiple stops along the route.
