So far, live coronavirus has been found in the sewage lines of many cities in the country.  But this is the first time the presence of corona virus has been reported in a natural water source.  Corona virus has been found in the Sabarmati river, the lifeline of Ahmedabad in Gujarat.  All samples taken from there were found to be infected.

Along with Sabarmati, samples taken from Kankaria, Chandola lake, another water source in Ahmedabad, have also been reported infected.  Not only that, when the researchers examined the rivers in the Guwahati region of Assam, a sample taken from the Bharu river was also found to be infected with corona.

The presence of very large amounts of viruses has been recorded in all these samples.  The study was conducted by 8 institutes of the country including IIT Gandhinagar.  It also includes researchers from JNU's School of Environmental Sciences in New Delhi.

According to Manish Kumar of the Department of Earth Sciences at the Indian Institute of Technology in Gandhinagar, the presence of the corona virus was reported during an investigation into sewage samples last year.

Following this study, the study was resumed to investigate the natural water source.  Ahmedabad has the highest number of waste water treatment plants and Guwahati does not have a single plant so sampling was started by selecting these two cities.
